Stage One
BREAK
Letting Go of Yesterday's Leadership
Transformation begins by recognizing that many leadership practices that contributed to past success may no longer be sufficient. This is often the most difficult stage because it requires leaders to challenge deeply held assumptions, habits, and identities.
Future-ready leaders intentionally identify and release behaviours that limit organizational adaptability. Examples include:
- excessive reliance on command-and-control leadership
- risk avoidance and fear of experimentation
- siloed thinking and functional optimization
- dependence on historical success formulas
- viewing AI primarily as a cost-reduction tool rather than a strategic capability
- assuming that expertise is more valuable than curiosity
“What got you here won't get you there.”
Breaking does not mean abandoning experience. Rather, it involves discerning which aspects of experience remain valuable and which must evolve. This stage requires humility, self-awareness, and the willingness to question long-standing assumptions.
The Break stage creates the psychological space necessary for meaningful leadership growth.
